Florida Drivers License

Florida Drivers License

Just like all other states, Florida has its own drivers license that allows you to drive in the state and all over the country. Your first step towards obtaining a Florida driver's license should be choosing the right license type.

Florida Driving License Types

At the moment, you can choose between the following driver's license types:

  • Class E. Regular drivers license, good for operating most of the common vehicles.
  • Class M. Motorcycle license.
  • CDLs. Commercial drivers licenses.

For most of the drivers out there, a regular class E drivers license will be sufficient. If, at any point in your life, you find the need to operate heavy machinery or a motorcycle, you can always apply for an additional drivers license type to be added to your existing license.

Florida GDL

The DHSMV in Florida treats safety seriously and this is why all Florida drivers license applicants are required to go through the graduated drivers license program. All drivers license applicants are required to complete a state-approved Drug and Alcohol Awareness course. In addition to this, teenagers who are under 18 years of age will have a minimum learners permit holding period of 12 months.

Permit Test

No matter how you are, applying for the Florida learners permit will be your first step in obtaining a drivers license. All permit applicants are required to take the a written exam that will covers the road signs, traffic laws and the information provided in the drivers ed course.

You can prepare for the test by going over the DHSMV driving manual which covers Florida drivers license rules in great details. Taking some practice permit tests is also a good idea as they will allow you to see if you are ready for the real thing.

Once you pass the permit test, you are issued with the instructional permit. The permit allows you to drive while being supervised by a driver 21 years old or older and you should take the time to practice your driving skills.

Drivers License Test

If you are at least 16 years old and you fulfilled all other requirements, you can apply for your Florida drivers license test. The driving exams are conducted on the appointment-only basis and you will need to provide your own vehicle.

Once you pass the drivers license test, you will be issued with your official Florida drivers license.
