Louisiana Drivers License

Louisiana Drivers License

Are you getting ready to hit the Louisiana roads? If you are not holding a driver license issued by another state, you will need to apply for the Louisiana drivers license and your first step should be choosing the right type of the driving license.

Louisiana Driver License Types

At the moment, the OMV in Louisiana offers the following driver license types:

  • Class E. Regular drivers license, allows for operation of most common vehicles.
  • Class D. Drivers license that allows you to operate heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of between 10,001 pounds and 26,001 pounds.
  • Class M. Motorcycle drivers license.
  • Class A, B and C. Commercial drivers licenses, CDLs.

Most of us drivers will only need the regular class E drivers license. However, if you plan on making a living of your driving skills, you may consider applying for one of the commercial driver licenses.

Louisiana Graduated License

The graduated drivers license system in Louisiana is very similar to that currently implemented in other states. Louisiana GDL laws apply to license applicants who are under 18 years of age and feature compulsory drivers education classes, a prolonged permit holding period and pairing up with a parent for the supervised driving.

Drivers Permit

No matter how old you are, obtaining the Louisiana learners permit is the first step on your way towards the drivers license. If you want to obtain the permit, you will be required to take a learners permit test at the OMV office.

If you want to pass the exam, you should study for it. If you have not gone through any drivers ed classes, you should grab a copy of the Louisiana drivers manual, which has everything you need to pass the test. Once you go over the manual, take a few practice tests to make sure you are fully prepared for the real thing.

Once you pass the test, you will be issued with the drivers permit.

Drivers License Test

The main reason why you were issued with a permit is because you need to practice driving before you can apply for your drivers license test. You can only practice driving with an individual who holds a valid Louisiana drivers license, the supervising person being seated next to you at all times.

When you are prepared for the exam, schedule an appointment with the OMV and take the driving test. If you pass the test, you will be issued with your official Louisiana drivers license. It is valid for 4 years and you will be required to renew it when it expires.
