Types of New Jersey Drivers Licenses

If you think about the fact that there are many different types of vehicles out there, you will come to realize that it would have been strange to have just one drivers license that fits all of those vehicles. This is why the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) offers different types of licenses. The the moment, you can choose between the following license classes:

  • Class D. Regular drivers license.
  • Class E. Motorcycle drivers license.
  • Class A, B and C. Commercial drivers licenses, CDLs.

If are you are the first-time applicant, then you should start by applying for the regular class D driver license. The regular operators license is more than enough for the majority of the population as it allows you to drive more of the common vehicles and trucks.

New Jersey Graduated Driver License

In order to ensure the safety of teen drivers, the New Jersey MVC has the graduated driving license system in place. The system targets drivers of all ages and it employs compulsory drivers training classes to fight the lack of education and driving experience among this age group.

Permit Testing

You cannot drive a vehicle unless you know the rules of the road, this fact is simple and is understood by everyone and the first step of the licensing procedure is taking the New Jersey permit test. If you are under 17 years old, you can also sign up for a New Jersey drivers education program and you will need to show the certificate of enrollment in behind the wheel lessons before you take the test.

More than 50% of the first-time license applicants fail the knowledge exam on their first try and it is not because the test is extremely difficult. This happens because most of the applicants fail to study for the test. If you want to pass the examination the first time you take it, you should obtain a copy of the MVC drivers handbook and read it thoroughly. Once done with the book, you can choose to test yourself by taking a New Jersey practice test.

When you pass the exam, you will be issued with one of the New Jersey learners permits, depending on your age.

Upgrading To Drivers License

Once you got your learners license, you can start honing your driving skills while being supervised by another licensed driver 21 years old or older. You cannot drive a vehicle on your own, make sure you observe this restriction at all times.

When you have gained enough driving experience and you have held your permit for the required time, you can schedule an appointment with the MVC, take your driving skills test and finally obtain your provisional drivers license. You will need to hold it for at least a year and observe all restrictions that are applicable to this license type. In twelve months the provisional license becomes your regular New Jersey drivers license.
