Iowa Driving License Types

Although most vehicles are made in the way that you can operate them in the same way, some may require additional skills. For example, riding a motorcycle is not the same as driving a heavy truck. Iowa GDL

The graduated drivers license system in Iowa was crafted to reduce the number of casualties among the teenage drivers. Similar laws were tested in other states and they were shown to save lives. That's why Iowa teen drivers license applicants are required to complete a state-approved drivers education course and are not allowed to drive unsupervised until they gain enough driving experience.

Permit Test

No matter how old you are, you will still be required to the Iowa permit test. You must prove to the DOT that you know the rules of the road and that you are ready to get behind the wheel. Learners License

You passed your exam, congratulations! At this point, the DOT does not give you your drivers license yet, you are issued with the Iowa learners permit. The permit allows you to practice driving while being supervised by a more experienced licensed driver and allows you to prepare for your drivers license exam.

Drivers License Test

When you are ready to take your driving test, you can schedule an appointment with the DOT. You are required to provide your own vehicle, which must be properly insured and be in a good technical condition.

Once you pass the exam, the DOT will issue you with your official Iowa drivers license.
