Washington Permit Test Questions

The questions you will get on your Washington learners permit test are based on the materials put forth in the Washington permit test book. The book is provided free of charge by the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) and you should check it out before you go in for the test. Learner's permit test questions cover the state road signs, traffic laws and safe driving practices and you must be well educated in all these subjects if you want to pass the exam.

Washington state drivers permit test has 25 questions and the passing score is 80%, which means that you need to answer at least 20 questions correctly. Most of the first time applicants make the mistake of not studying for the exam, thinking that general knowledge of driving rules should be sufficient to pass. Unfortunately, that is not the case with the permit test and more than a half of all first time applicants fail the test the first time they take it. Just to give you an idea of what kind of questions to expect, here is a sample permit test question you can try.

When the vehicle is parked on the hill facing uphill, should your front wheels be turned toward the curb or away from the curb?

The correct answer is away from the curb, so if your vehicle starts rolling, it will roll into the curb.

Studying for the Drivers Permit Test

There are many options when it comes to studying for the permit test. You can start by downloading the official drivers handbook. The book contains a comprehensive description of the licensing procedure and it covers the state road signs and driving rules. In addition to that, it also has some basic information about safe driving practices.

If you are not satisfied with the information provided in the manual or you are looking for some extra study materials, you should consider taking a Washington drivers education program. State-approved classes feature 30 hours of classroom time and six hours of behind the wheel practice. Drivers ed is a great way to prepare for the learners permit test and also receive some professional driving instructions. If you are applying for a drivers license before you turn 18 years of age, the graduated drivers license law requires you to take a mandatory drivers education class anyway, so why not sign up for it early?

Finally, there are also permit practice tests. Although they cannot be used as a stand alone study guide, Washington practice permit tests can help you identify problematic topics and show you how well you can do on the real exam. Keep in mind, there are other practice tests available on the site, you can take this free Washington driving practice test or the Washington DOL practice test with unlimited sample questions!

Taking Washington Permit Test

According to a graduated drivers license program, the minimum age for taking the drivers permit test is 15 years old. You must already be enrolled in a drivers education class and be able to show proof of enrollment at the DOL testing center. If you didn't enroll in drivers ed, you won't be able to take the test until you are at least 15 years, 6 months old.

Although no appointment is necessary, you should contact your local DOL office before you go in for the test. Not every DOL office offers testing services, so you will need to find the one that does. You should arrive at least an hour before closing time, the testing center stops admitting the applicants 30 minutes before closing.

When you show up for your Washington state permit test, be prepared to do the following:

  • present proof of residence
  • present proof of ID
  • provide your Social Security number
  • take a vision exam

Providing proof of ID is not mandatory at this point, but then you won't be able to use it as means of identification.

If you are under 18 years of age, you will need to have a parent or legal guardian present at the time when you apply for your Washington learners permit. Your parent will need to sign a Parental Authorization Affidavit.

If you are under 18 years of age, you are issued with a learners permit once you pass the Washington state permit test and you will have to observe the permit restrictions until you get your Washington driver license. If you are over 18 years of age, you do not have to get a permit at this point, you can just take a driver skills test and get a license right away.

For those teens who took a drivers education class, the knowledge test can be waived at the time of the application for a learners permit. However, that does not mean that you will never have to take the test - you will need to take it when you will be applying for your drivers license.
