Taking the NY DMV Permit Test

The licensing agency in New York is the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and you will get your NYS learners permit and drivers license from them. However, in order to make the procedure more convenient for the public, the Department delegates permit testing to other agencies and organizations. High school students may take the NYC permit test at their high school if the high school is participating in the DMV Online Knowledge Test Application (OKTA) program. The school does not have to offer drivers ed courses to be able to offer permit testing to their students and you can check with the school officials whether this option is available to you. Taking the permit test online is much more convenient than doing it at one of the DMV offices and will save you some time during your application.

If the above requirements are met and you pass the NYS permit test, you will receive your permit. Permit holders younger than 18 will have to observe the graduated license requirements before they get an unrestricted driving license.
