Delaware Learners Permit

Delaware Learners Permit

If you ever plan on obtaining a license in Delaware and you are not holding a license issued by another state or country, obtaining the Delaware learners permit will be your first step. Delaware learner’s permit will allow you to practice the driving skills before you will apply for the actual license.

Graduated License

The instructional learners permit is one of the key stages in the graduated drivers license system. Most of the road accidents that involve teenage drivers are usually caused by lack of driving experience and education. The graduated drivers license system is there to ensure that all teens are well prepared for their future on the Delaware roads.

Applying For Learners Permit

No matter how old you are, if you plan on obtaining a license in Delaware, you will have to apply for the instructional learners permit first. In order to apply for the permit, you will need to take the written permit test at one of the DMV offices.

If you want to be prepared for the DMV permit test, you should study the Delaware drivers manual. You may also test your knowledge with some practice permit tests.

Those looking for some extra study materials should consider taking a drivers education class. For those who are under 18, this is not a consideration because they are legally obliged to take a state-approved drivers education class before they can be issued with a learners permit.

Parental Involvement

Just like in most other states, your parents will need to participate in the process by granting you permission to obtain a drivers permit. One of your parents will need to sign as your sponsor on the applicant for Delaware drivers permit. By signing the form, your parents assume full financial responsibility for any damages you may cause while driving on your permit.

If you satisfy all the requirements and pass your permit exam, the DMV issues you with the Delaware instructional permit.

Permit Restrictions and Limitations

Even though you may be excited by being able to drive, you should remember that your learners permit is not a full unrestricted license and you do not have full driving privileges yet. The learners permit has certain restrictions, the main one being the fact that you must always have a licensed driver who is at least 25 years old sitting next to you while you are driving.

Failure to observe these restrictions may result in your learner’s permit revocation.

Applying for Drivers License

Students who are under 18 years of age will need to hold the learners permit for at least 12 months. After this period, the learners permit will automatically be upgraded to the Delaware driver’s license.
