Utah Learners Permit

Utah Learners Permit

Utah learners permit is your first major step on the way towards the drivers license. Utah drivers permit provides you with a great opportunity to practice the driving skills before you go in to take the road test.

GDL

Utah has its own version of the graduated drivers license system, but it is not much different from similar systems utilized in other states. The graduated drivers license system divides the license application process into multiple steps and allows teenage drivers to gain some driving experience before they get out on the road on their own. Most of the GDL restrictions apply to drivers under 18 years of age, however, absolutely all license applicants in Utah must complete a drivers education program. Learners permit is an essential part of the GDL system, as it allows drivers to gain some driving experience while being supervised by a seasoned driver who can point out possible mistakes and help to steer clear of any potentially dangerous situations.

Applying for Learners Permit

You can apply for the Utah learner's permit as soon as you turn 15, however, it does not means that you cannot start the application procedure before then. As you may know, when you apply for the drivers permit, you will be required to take a Utah permit test. The exam will test your knowledge of driving rules and it is based on the Utah drivers manual, hence there is no better source of information when it comes to preparing for the exam. You may also want to test your newly acquired skills with Utah practice permit tests.

When you feel that you are prepared and you satisfy the age requirements, visit the DMV office for your test. While at the office, be prepared to do the following:

  • provide proof of name
  • provide proof of residency
  • provide the social security card
  • pay the application fee
  • take a vision exam
  • take written test

Applicants who are under 18 years of age must also have a parent or a legal guardian to sign the application form.

If you pass the test successfully, you will be issued with your Utah drivers permit.

Learners Permit Restrictions

The learners permit was primarily designed to give you a chance to hone your driving skills and it comes with certain drivers permit restrictions. The main limitation of the drivers permit is the fact that the permit holder can drive only while being supervised by another licensed driver.

Upgrading to Drivers License

If you are under 18 years of age, you will need to hold the learners permit for at least 6 months and you will need to complete a drivers education program during this period. Applicants who are over 18 years of age don't have to have the permit for 6 months, but they still need to complete a drivers education program.

The driving exam is usually incorporated into the drivers education course and you can take it with the driving school that you chose for your drivers ed. If, for some reason, you are unable to take the test with the driving school, you will need to schedule the road test with the DMV.

When you complete the road skills test, you are issued with a temporary license. Your real Utah drivers license is mailed to you within 2-3 weeks.
