PennDOT Permit Test Question 51

Did you know that over 1.2 million crashes every year happen due to driver distraction and inattention to road and traffic conditions? What's even more amazing is the fact that teenagers are much more likely to miss something on the road when they get distracted than an average adult driver. The PennDOT does a great job at uncovering these statistics in the drivers handbook and questions on accident prevention almost always appear on the PennDOT permit test. Today we will be looking at one of such questions from the PennDOT practice test.

PennDOT Test Question

Remember that you can always find the answer to any of these practice sample questions in the official Pennsylvania drivers manual. The book is great and it has everything you need to pass your PennDOT permit test successfully, since pretty much all of the questions on your permit test are based on this book. The answer is not always straightforward because the DOT wants you to be able to apply your knowledge as opposed to simply memorizing a bunch of words.

“THE TOP MAJOR CRASH TYPE FOR 16 YEAR OLD DRIVERS IN PENNSYLVANIA IS:”

A. Single vehicle/run-off-the-road
B. Being sideswiped on an interstate
C. Driving in reverse on a side street
D. Driving on the shoulder of a highway

Permit Test Answers

Answer A to this PennDOT practice test tells us that single vehicle, run-off-the-road accidents are the top major crash type for 16 year old drivers in Pennsylvania. Let's check out other options before we make up our minds.

Answer B to the DMV PA practice permit test tells us that “being sideswiped on an interstate is a very common crash type for 16 year old drivers. This is not true and such accidents account for a very small proportion of all crashes. Even when such accidents occur, in most cases they don't lead to any major damages since vehicles just touch lightly, there is no major collision.

Answer C to the PennDOT practice permit test claims that driving in reverse on a side street is the top major reason for crashes among teen drivers. When you think about this, you will understand that this simply cannot be true. While driving in reverse does pose some challenges to new drivers, it is usually done at low speed so other motorists will have enough time to react should a mistake happen and prevent an accident.

Answer D to the permit practice test PA question suggests that driving on the shoulder of a highway is the leading cause of traffic accidents for teen drivers. Once again, this is not correct. Driving on the shoulder of a highway is not that common, while some new drivers are having difficulty controlling the position of the vehicle on the road, they still try to keep it close to the center of the lane. Driving on the should of a highway is definitely not the leading cause of traffic accidents among teens.

Correct PennDOT Practice Test Answer

According to the drivers handbook, the correct answer to this sample practice question is A:

“THE TOP MAJOR CRASH TYPE FOR 16 YEAR OLD DRIVERS IN PENNSYLVANIA IS SINGLE VEHICLE/RUN-OFF-THE-ROAD”

This is confirmed by the official PennDOT drivers manual so make sure to select this answer if you encounter it on your PennDOT permit test. From 2009 to 2011, there were 2293 crashes of this kind and 49 people were killed as a result of such traffic accidents. Most of the accidents were caused by speeding at failure to control the vehicle at high speed. Remember: speed kills. Never travel at a speed you are not comfortable with, never exceed the speed limit, always make an honest judgment about your driving skills. Getting somewhere five minutes earlier is not worth your life.
