While the answer does look appealing at first glance and may be chosen by those who did not pay due attention while reading the handbook, it is not correct. The center lane may be used for passing by drivers traveling in both directions only if it is marked by a single broken yellow line on both sides.

Answer B to Virginia DMV practice test tells us that this lane may be used for making an emergency stop. This could not be further from the truth. Making an emergency stop in the middle of the road is very dangerous and may lead to a high-speed collision. If you need to stop, ALWAYS try to pull over to the right side of the road.
