Answer A to the MVA practice test question tells us that in such situations, we need to switch to low beam at least 200 feet away from the vehicle traveling in the same direction. Unfortunately, this is a bit too close and if you wait until the vehicle in front of you is just 200 feet away before switching to low beam, you will cause quite a bit of discomfort to the driver in front of you.

Answer B to the MVA learners practice test suggests that the correct answer to the question. According to the MVA handbook, this seems like the right answer. Keep in mind though - this is the absolute minimum distance, you may switch to low beam much sooner if the situation warrants it.

Answer C to the Maryland MVA practice test offers us to switch to low beam at a distance of 400 feet. While this will be more comfortable for other drivers, the state does not require you to do so.

Answer D to the MVA online test tells us to switch to low beam at a distance of 500 feet. This answer would have been correct if the question was about a vehicle coming in the opposite direction. Since the current question is about the distance to a vehicle traveling in the same direction as you, this answer is not correct.

Correct Answer To The MVA Test

Most of you have already guessed the right answer to this MVA permit test. Nevertheless, the correct answer to the question is B:

“While using the headlights at high beam, you must change to low beam if there are vehicles traveling in the same direction at a distance of 300 feet or less”

Remember, this is a minimum distance, it is totally fine to switch to low beam a bit earlier, since it will ensure that you are not blinding anyone. We can imagine the time when this law will become obsolete, since German engineers already developed a system that automatically controls your headlights and switches between high and low beam depending on the situation around you. Some systems are even able to track position of other vehicles on the road and use low beam only for those parts of the road occupied by those vehicles, while lighting the rest of the road with high beam.
